SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hydro held the groundbreaking ceremony of its new aluminium recycling plant in Szekesfehervar, Hungary on 1st September. The new facility is expected to commence production during the initial quarter of 2024.
The company press release noted that the recycling plant will be built alongside the company’s aluminium extrusion plant in Szekesfehervar. The plant will accept both production scrap and post-consumer scrap, which in turn will be recycled and converted into new products. The new recycling facility will have an annual production capacity of approximately 90,000 tonnes. The plant will be built at an investment of around Euro 88 million and is expected to generate nearly 80 new jobs in the region.
Commenting on the development, Hilde Merete Aasheim, President and CEO, Hydro noted that the new facility is an important investment for a greener future and will strengthen Hydro’s position as a leading supplier of high quality, low-carbon aluminium to the market. Recycled aluminium is becoming more and more important within the extrusion industry, he added.
The plant marks a breakthrough step in the company’s efforts to boost its recycling capacity in Central and Eastern Europe.
